Meditation for Beginners

You've heard meditation can improve your life, but maybe you need proof. According to a recent study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, meditation can actually increase the functioning of the immune system, and improve brain activity. The findings from this study revealed increased levels of antibodies in subjects who meditated. In addition, those people who practiced meditation saw as much as a 50 percent increase in brain activity in the part of the brain responsible for producing positive emotions and reducing anxiety.

This study makes meditation sound pretty good, but maybe you still think you don't have time to incorporate it into your daily life. Once you learn the basics, you can expect to see significant changes in your health and well-being with just 10 to 20 minutes a week of meditation.

Five Tips for Easy Meditation for Beginners

1. Find a comfortable room where you will not be disturbed. Turn off cellphones and close the door. Let anyone you live with know you do want to be disturbed for the next 30 minutes.

2. Close your eyes. Adding some lubricating eyedrops to your eyes before you close them can help sooth your eyes and relax them very quickly. When your eyes are soothed and relaxed your entire body can relax more quickly.

3. Breath deeply. Take in 5-10 deep full breaths. Inhaling slowly through your nose and as you exhale (through your mouth) mentally repeat the word, Relax.

4. Mentally scan your body from head to toe. Begin with the muscles of your face, mouth, jaw and neck. If you notice tension there mentally send a warm relaxing thought to that area of your body, instructing it to relax. Continue all the way to your feet

5. Imagine your favorite color surrounding you in a mist or blanket of protection, comfort and relaxation. Visualize the color in your mind and allow yourself to 'feel' the color all around you.
